On 31 January JISC released its latest funding call from the Digital Infrastructure team – JISC Grant Funding 01/12: Digital Infrastructure Programme. While there are many interesting strands within this call related to different programmes, this post provides details on the Access and Identity Management (AIM) elements (Appendix E in the call document).

The deadline for submissions is 12:00 on 16 March 2012. Please check the eligibility criteria within the call document before applying.

JISC has recently released guidelines on how to make your bid stand out from the crowd. I would strongly recommend reading this before writing a proposal, especially if you are new to bidding for JISC funding or have previously been unsuccessful with a proposal.

A fundamental objective of the AIM programme and this call is to raise the profile and enhance understanding of the importance and benefits of Identity Management within Further and Higher Education, highlighting the importance in having the correct processes and policies in place and how these lead to improvements in efficiencies and effectiveness and reduced costs.

There are 3 strands related to AIM and these are in Appendices E1 to E3. Please ensure the general overview in Appendix E is read as well as this contains important background information. The strands are as follows:

1) Future Directions (Appendix E1)

Funding Available

A total of £250,000 is available to fund 5-10 projects of between £20,000 and £50,000 per project from June 2012 till May 2013.

Details

Proposals are invited which look at new and emerging technologies, solutions and trends in Access and Identity management. The following areas have been identified as requiring particular attention. However, this is not an exhaustive list and proposals are invited which show an innovative approach and use of access and identity management related technologies, particularly those that have an impact across domains and communities:

These are described in detail within the call document. Particular attention should be paid to the Scope, Objectives, Requirements and Outputs sections of the call.

2) Raptor Evaluation (Appendix E2)

Funding Available

A total of £50,000 is available to fund 3-5 projects of between £10,000 and £20,000 per project from June till December 2012.

Details

Raptor is a free to use, open source software suite generally designed to enable accounting within event-based systems, and specifically aimed at accounting within systems that handle authentication events such as the Shibboleth IdP, OpenAthens LA, and EZproxy. The production ready version was released in December 2012. Projects are invited to provide small case studies evaluating the installation and use of the Raptor toolkit within an institutional context to aid management decisions which can feed back into the future development of the Raptor toolkit.

3) Identity Management Toolkit Case Studies (Appendix E3)

Funding Available

A total of £75,000 is available to fund 2-3 projects of between £25,000 and £50,000 per project from August 2012 till May 2013.

Details

The Identity Management Toolkit was launched in April 2010 and it is currently in the process of being reviewed. The review is due for completion in July 2012 and, therefore, projects are sought which will start in August 2012 and apply the revised toolkit within their institution. The projects are required to empirically assess the revisions to the toolkit in real world scenarios and to provide additional case studies based on the revised Toolkit to assist the adoption and application of the Toolkit within institutions.

Please note that, at the time of writing, the IdM Toolkit website http://www.identity-project.org redirects to the project page on the JISC website. This is a temporary redirection while the Toolkit is relocated from its previous LSE home to a new host.
